trailer break: ‘Despicable Me’Take a break from work: watch a trailer... I’ve already seen this, but Universal is embargoing all commentary on the film from critics who’ve seen it till June 28th, so I can’t say anything at all. Not even that an embargo on this movie makes very little sense. But I can say this, and I would have said this even before I saw the film. I’m so tired of all the sequels and remakes and reboots and adaptations from TV and comic books... even when they’re good, because I’m so hungry to see new stories and new characters and new everything. And this, at least, does offer that: it’s a totally original story! Written originally for the screens of cinema! What a concept! Also: That totally does not sound like Steve Carell as Gru, does it? Neat. Despicable Me opens in the U.S. and Canada on July 9, and in the U.K. on October 15. support

This movie looks completely adorable. I've been waiting to see it for a year now, and I haven't been disappointed by any trailers. Hopefully that continues when I go see it.
Although, it's not a problem for me as I'm in Canada, but why is there such a massive delay in it premiering in the U.K.? Usually it seems most movies are somewhat close in opening dates, but this one seems abundantly so.

Heh. Moviemakers have to be pretty brave to include a line that critic-friendly in a trailer.
And yes, it doesn't sound like Carrell's usual voice which is good news for those of us who are tired of how almost every one of his movie characters--save his Uncle Arthur in Bewitched--sound exactly like his Michael Scott character in The Office.
This one might actually be worth watching.
However, I find it kinda ominous that while I was typing this, I kept imagining a knockoff entitled Despicable Who which is all about this evil time traveller who runs around committing bad deeds and who one day inherits--oh, on second thought, I really should save that for fanfic...

Wow, I guess I need to be even more specific:
Not only does this trailer for *Descpicable Me* appear to show a story that is wholly original, it appears not to be a ripoff/riff on/retread of something we've seen 18 billion times before masquerading as a new story with new characters.

I'm sure this'll be a good movie, but reading some other reviews it sounds like it borrows a lot from other films. And I'm sure I can predict how the orphans' plot arc ends from the trailer.

The fans of animation movies should take their seats one more time, for the this time non-Pixar animation Despicable Me deserves a wide and close attention with its fresh look and funny, warm characters. The film is directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, and the screenplay written by Ken Daurio is based on a story by Sergio Pablos.

While this movie looks great, I am almost to the point of hating it just because they are cramming it down our throats constantly. I don't think you can watch 5 minutes of NBC programming without an ad for this movie scrolling along the bottom. They've even done a couple of inside the show ads where, for instance, a minion auditions for Last Comic Standing. That plus IHOP is the best company who you can get a food deal with? Really? I DVR 90% of what I watch and I'm still seeing too many ads for this thing. Don't they realize that one ad during a show is all you need? Any more and you start annoying people.
