Don't forget homophobic and antisemitic. Seriously, the fact that THIS is what it took to MAYBE end his career after several bigoted statements is sad.
It pisses me off that guys defend him by saying oh she shouldn't have taped him, she set him up, we've all said things like that in the heat of the moment ... REALLY ...YOU'VE SAID THINGS LIKE THAT IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT? - YOU ARE A FUCKING SICK PUPPY! YOU NEED SERIOUS PSYCHIATRIC HELP
he told her that they're spiritually incompatible, make you wonder what would be compatible with him? some kind of aryan, mute and submisive sex slave?
It's hard to come up with any kind of excuse for this behavior. He'd been caught making outlandishly racist and antisemitic statements before, and here he is just upping the ante. Honestly, what the hell drives a man to go out of his way to say that crap? Alcoholism? Creeping senility (gods, he's only 54)? Frustration about something else in his life that he can't control? Whatever demons are driving Mel, he's got to get rid of them pronto...

Oh sure, haven't you ever gotten pissed off, lost your cool, and forgot that you're not really a racist misogynist bastard?
Bwa ha ha ha ha!
Of course we've all "been there" in the sense of saying things we don't mean just to hurt someone. But that's stuff like "I never loved you!" If your mind immediately jumps to racial slurs and telling a woman it's her fault if she gets sexually assaulted, hey guess what, anger didn't put those thoughts in your head! They just caused you to stop remembering you can't say them!
That excuse is almost as hilarious as when Gibson himself actually used the excuse that alcohol made him anti-semetic.
Oh yeah, you're a totally pro-semite kind of guy! It was the alcohol talking! Hey dipshit, alcohol doesn't spontaneously make you hate Jews. It just makes you forget you're not supposed to express your hate out loud in front of an audience!
Honestly, what the hell drives a man to go out of his way to say that crap? Alcoholism?
I think it's more likely that he normally goes out of his way not to say that crap, and alcoholism or whatever other problems have broken his resolve.
I think those things were always in his head, but young Mel Gibson knew his career would go nowhere if he didn't keep them bottled up. The only reason he can get away with it now (I hope not anymore) is because he has that whole crazily successful career behind him.
He used to be pretty. Over the years his demons have begun to show on his face. I actually began to be disenchanted with him along about his 5th kid, when it became known that he considered himself a good Catholic and would keep his wife pregnant as long he wanted. One wonders if that figured into the divorce, and the ensuing new kid with the girlfriend.
Loads of women on the comments boards supporting him too which is really sad.
He used to be pretty but that kind of insane bitterness starts to show on your face when you're older. His ex-wife is, I believe, not Catholic. He made some comment a while ago about her not being allowed into heaven because she's not Catholic and him being ok with that. I think she's probably been a buffer for him, god help her. It's like when Cruise fired Pat Kinsgley - it let the crazy out.
I've seen it happen to men when they become older - they start going to mass every day and become more religiously intolerant so I don't know if it was that, the ability/desire to get pregnant again or she just got fed up with him. I'm hoping it was the last one.
It's like when Cruise fired Pat Kinsgley - it let the crazy out.
God, that is so true. Are publicists the unsung heroes of the Hollywood star system? They get a bad rap, but everything just turns to shit without them.
I'm glad everyone's calling BS on the "anger/alcohol" excuses, I'm sick to death of hearing them. "But we've all gone on a bit of a Protocols of the Elders of Zion thing when we're drunk!" Er, no, I haven't.

I must be hanging out with the wrong type of Catholics because the last time I checked, few of my Catholic friends and relatives thought it was a particularly cool thing to break their wife's arm or cuss her out, much less speculate upon her chances of getting into heaven.
Then again, it's been my experience that domestic abuse tends to be a nondenominational thing. People of all religious backgrounds--and for that matter, of all races and classes-- tend to practice it and I'm sure there's some folks who don't even need to be religious to practice it. (For example, I would like to think it's unknown in officially atheist countries like Russia and Cuba--but I doubt it.)
As for Gibson's racial rant, well, one hardly needs to be Sherlock Holmes to guess that a man who promotes one type of prejudice in public probably indulges in other types of prejudice in private.

I am, however, sad that it is so.

It's not mine. That's what my fellow critic David Edelstein called the film.

Like they said on South Park, the man is crazy but he does know story structure (personally I thought The Passion was a fantastic film).

Mel should be forced to only play as Detective Riggs in a series of Lethal Weapon sequels for the rest of his life. He won't even have to act.

I agree with you people. Anger and alcohol never bring out any demons that aren't already there.

But but but, Mel was fighting those nasty racist South Africans in Lethal Weapon 2, alongside that guy who's getting too old for that shit. :)

I read this on another comments section.
For someone who hates gays and jews, showbusiness was an odd career choice.
