‘Doctor Who’ thing of the day: one vision of an Americanized ‘Doctor Who’

I have nothing but contempt for this blog post, it having cited C+A+D. Need I explain further, or do you "get it"? You know, because I'm referring to how every strip explains itself. Just in case. Like this comment. I bet you get it now, how I posted this comment about how C+A+D explains the joke in every strip.

To be fair, Jason Statham *is* awesome. He may not be an ideal candidate for the Doctor but he is a great candidate for the Female Gaze.

Although, oddly, still photographs don't really manage to capture him at his best (bald head and a bag of muscles) nor do they show the "real man" aesthetic and charisma at work in his better movies.

Jason's name was bandied around before as a replacement to David so that's nothing new. Anyway, I do not want another attempt made to Americanize the show. They mucked it up last time and why either bother. The UK Dr Who is an institution going back to 1963. Leave it alone.

What JoshDM is trying to say is that neither Ctrl+Alt+Del itself or Tim Buckley are well regarded within the webcomics community. Leaving aside the "off-screen" antics of the author, the strip itself suffers from several problems: one of which was pacing problems due to the author's former insistence in using 4 panels per strip regardless of whether the situation called for it or not (as evidenced in this strip, he seems to be breaking the trend). As a result, you'd often have jokes that worked better in two or three panels followed by a completely superfluous panel or two in which Buckley simply repeats or explains the joke having nothing better to do. Of course the strip has much worse problems than this (the one that gets me the most is an utterly unlikable protagonist who in the real world would be institutionalized as criminally insane yet in the strip keeps becoming more and more successful, getting a wife and owning a gaming store), which has turned it into somewhat of a joke in the webcomics world.

Still, I acknowledge that several times, CAD has done some pretty good strips (the strip seems to be at it's best when it focuses on gaming or one off parodies such as this one). Unfortunately it's not always simple to separate the author from its art, no matter how valid this can be.

Here's a bit of history that isn't generally known. Go take a look at the old "Star Trek" episode featuring Robert Lansing as Gary Seven. The deal was that it was a pilot (which didn't get picked up) and it was a Hollywoodization of Dr. Who.

I gather the official line is that the similarities are accidental, but my uncle, who worked on the lot at the time, says that everyone on the show believed the inspiration was Dr. Who. He told me there was a lot of curiosity and discussion on the crew's part about this British show none of them had ever seen.

Its just a funny little Doctor Who thing I sent in. Not really an examination of the artist's comic. When is a web comic supposed to be like real life? Well one could say the webcomic Real Life should although they do travel in space and time often and have a talking computer. Its just a "Comic".

And does that have *anything* to do with the one-panel piece I linked to, or Buckley's comments on what prompted him to create it?

I didn't say that Josh's reaction was appropriate. Just giving it the proper context. Maybe I should have let him explain this, but given the tone of the comment I have the feeling he won't.
