Courage is daring to take a chance, knowing that you might fail.
Though with my interpretation, maybe it'd be more appropriate to have a 1 showing.

I think this might be more of a role-playing gaming thing -- ie, rolling a 20 on courage.

Well yeah where else but RPGs do you see 20-sided dice?
But if I was going to go the "rolling a 20 on courage" route, I'd have gone for "will" or "willpower" since that's an actual roll (and would be used when testing one's courage) in the d20 system. :)
