watch it: “Movie Review”Hoorah! Film criticism has become yet another menial task that can outsourced to machines. Our long cultural nightmare of film critics giving the best years of their lives to this onerous, mindless labor is now over: This is a fine example of what’s coming out of Northwestern University’s Intelligent Information Laboratory, which replaces journalists with algorithms: News At Seven is a system that automatically generates a virtual news show. Totally autonomous, it collects, parses, edits and organizes news stories and then passes the formatted content to artificial anchors for presentation. Using the resources present on the web, the system goes beyond the straight text of the news stories to also retrieve relevant images and blogs with commentary on the topics to be presented. The secret is, this replacement has already occurred at all the finest mainsteam media establishments. Go America! (via Pajiba) Disqus commentsblog comments powered by Disqus |

I for one welcome our new autonomous computer overlords.

Only thing going to save you is if you start tapping into your unborn conjoined twin 99% absorbed into your brain and do your reviews in a Siskel & Ebert style repartee.

"Jane, you ignorant robot slut!"
As a card-carrying Luddite, I will stick with human reviewers, although there are many movies out today that I will have a clone watch for me.

Did Demand Studios come up with this idea so they don't have to pay anyone now?

But do they cry at the ending of Stealth?
Seems to me that the cleverness here is in stripping text out of pieces already written by actual humans, and jamming it together in a way that sounds vaguely sensible.

Frankly, I find this disturbing. It's intelligible, but devoid of anything substantial; a creme-puff discourse if there ever was one.
Yet I can't help shake the feeling that it might be intended as a critique of the current news media paradigm: "You people are so full of it that an algorithm can do the same job!" Hrm.

nyjm: I thought the same thing. In fact, one of the first things that came to mind was that scene from the "Bart Gets an Elephant" Simpsons episode:
(taken from snpp.com)
Boss: This is the DJ 3000. It plays CDs automatically, and it has three distinct varieties of inane chatter.
DJ 3000: [stilted] Hey, hey. How about that weather out there? Woah! _That_ was the caller from hell. Well, hot dog! We have a weiner.
Bill: Man, that thing's great!
Marty: _Don't_ praise the machine!
Boss: If you don't get that kid an elephant by tomorrow, the DJ 3000 gets your job.
[Marty punches it]
DJ 3000: Those clowns in congress did it again. What a bunch of clowns.
Bill: [laughs] How does it keep up with the news like that?
