trailer break: ‘The Winning Season’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer...

Ah, and there’s the entire movie for ya. Just saved ya ten bucks.

I remember this flick from my childhood, when it was called The Bad News Bears. This is from filmmaker James C. Strouse, who made the indies Grace Is Gone and Lonesome Jim. I guess he figured arthouse sadness wasn’t working for him, so he went in the other direction, toward goofy feel-good sports movies. I never thought of Sam Rockwell as the new Walter Matthau, though. That’s kinda sad for Rockwell, actually.

I’ll tell ya why everyone will be renting this someday: to see an early performance by Rooney Mara. She’s not even mentioned in the trailer, but she’s the English-language girl with the dragon tattoo.

The Winning Season opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 3; no Canadian or U.K. release dates have been announced.

At least with 'Bad News Bears' they were young kids who didn't know anything about baseball.

I was kind of insulted that they had the young women in this film look so completely clueless about basketball. I mean, have them at least look like they know where the basket is even if their team work needs some coaching. (and the "little puppy" remark was pretty off putting as well).

Am I being overly sensitive? Maybe it's because I was playing basketball before Title IX and remember when this was the image of women athletes cultivated by college sports directors to justify the staggering inequity in funding for men's and women's varsity sports.

My God, it's the Script-O-Matic 9000! Run for your lives!

(Seriously, did anyone with an ounce of creativity work on this project? Easy enough to find out: they'll be the ones surrounded by empty bottles at the wrap party.)
