Hmmm... the only time I get annoyed is when I load up somebody's channel page and it auto-plays their most recent video. But for embeds it always gives me the choice to either play or not.
I was actually convinced this was an option on the account playback settings page, but it isn't!
Are you using Firefox? If so, you can install the greasemonkey extension, and then this script and it won't autoplay. Plus, it'll automatically buffer the videos when you load the page, and you can choose to make it default to high definition and remove the annoying ads that pop up over the videos if you want as well. It makes YouTube much more pleasant.

They used to allow users the option to shut off autoplay. Did they change that?

I don't mind autoplay so much on Youtube, but I really, really can't stand it on news websites.
