reasons to subscribe at $1 per month: Part IV• I was approached this week by a company who wanted me to review certain movies so they could insert text ads related to the subject matter of those movies into my review. I told them an emphatic no. • “In the arts, the critic is the only independent source of information. The rest is advertising.” --Pauline Kael (More reasons to come...) I’m looking for at least 5,000 readers to subscribe to FlickFilosopher.com for at least a buck per month by October 1. GOAL: Subscription/donation links after the jump. Detailed explanation of what this is all about is here.
Subscriptions are set to run monthly until you cancel. I hope you’ll let it run for at least 12 months. Or, make a one-time donation of at least $12/£10/whatever the equivalent is in your currency: Donate via PayPal any amount (in almost any currency): (Sorry, I can’t accept donations via Amazon Payments. That’s Amazon’s restriction, not mine.) And since readers asked for more options, here are a few. If you want more options, just let me know and I shall oblige:

You mean Mike D. from {redacted}? :)
Inserting text ads is fine if they're distinct from the review text, which I guess defeats the purpose.

"Relevant" advertisements, with the current state of the art in keyword recognition, can be mildly amusing - they'll work out for example that a film has a lot to do with war, and try to sell you all sorts of gung-ho "War Is Swell" stuff, but fail to realise that it's actually The Hurt Locker.
Not that this makes it worth the time to identify and skip over them.

Those "in-text" javascript ads are the only ones I always block no matter what website it is. I am a mouse-mover, meaning I highlight the text I'm reading as I read it. It's kinda wierd, I admit... but I become completely enraged when I have to sit there while a javascript popup loads because I moused over some random ridiculous ad-text within an article (CHUD.com is guilty of this, though I have a hard time remembering because I blocked the shit out of INTELLITEXT or whetever it was ages ago).
So, as a subscriber, I wanna say "thanks" to MaryAnn for not making me have to spend 30 seconds figuring out how to disable that bullshit on this website. :)
Keep up the great work. I'm going to see The American tomorrow just so I can prove how wrong you were... or were you? We'll see in 12 hours!! :D

Newbs, it's called "NoScript" and plugs into your FireFox browser. Might help a bit, even if it does require you to configure it to release specific sites for your first few weeks of general browsing.
