‘Doctor Who’ thing of the day: homemade Dalek

Reader Melissa writes:

I attended my very first SciFi con this weekend, and there was an amazing Dalek there.

And it is indeed an amazing Dalek:

I’ve been to a lot of conventions and seen a lot of fanmade stuff, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Dalek that looks this good.

What is it about Daleks that so inspires fannish imagination? I mean, for the longest time, for most of the 25-year span of the original iteration of the show, you could escape a Dalek merely by running up or down a flight of stairs. So why were they so riveting, even then? Is it the fact that they really are alien? (They don’t have faces we could call even remotely humanoid, for one.) As silly as the Daleks are, when you think about it, and as tired as I am of seeing the new show fall back on them time and time again, I cannot deny that there is something totally enthralling about them. But I can’t put my finger on what it is.

I need to think seriously about this important issue...
