trailer break: ‘Inside Job’

I’m really starting to wonder what the point of these documentaries is. I don’t mean that no one should be making them, or that no one should be seeing them, or that they don’t have important things to say. But I do feel like the way our cultural discourse is structured -- or not structured, actually -- these days means that the only people who see them are already onboard with what they’re saying. No one is being convinced of anything, no minds are being changed, and nothing gets done in response. That’s not the fault of the filmmakers, it’s the fault of all of us who simply don’t care, or feel powerless (and are probably right to feel that way). It’s very, very disheartening.

Inside Job is now playing in limited release in the U.S. and Canada; it opens in the U.K. on February 18, 2011.
