a few thoughts on ‘The Walking Dead’: “Guts”

Chopping up the zombie body to disguise themselves with zombie blood is clever, and I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that before (except for Shaun and Co. trying to hide among the zombie hoard by shuffling down the street, without the coating of zombie guts). Still, I’m not sure there are any characters I really like very much here, and I know I definitely don’t like the attitude the show is taking toward its characters, which is none at all, mostly. The only characters we’re getting any insight into are the not-very-nice ones.

Because, look: People just wander off in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, into the woods, by themselves, with no weapons? Really? Oh, wait: it’s so they can meet up for an end-of-the-world assignation! Could maybe these people die first? And maybe they will, since now they’re really not paying attention to what’s going on around them...

Are the sheriff’s wife and the sheriff’s partner grieving in any way for the sheriff? Were they having an affair before the zombie apocalypse struck, and the end of the world is no reason not to continue with this? Or is he just being an asshole -- he must know that this woman is his partner’s wife, right? -- and is she just proving what the sheriff said about her, that she’s basically evil? Was she faithful to the husband she is now separated from but now has had no problem whatsoever transferring her affections, such as they are, to the alpha male of her little group of survivors? And why are they hiding their relationship? Do they suspect that the sheriff is still alive? (After all, there seems to be a lot of connections between the two groups of survivors we’ve seen so far, which is more than a little preposterous.) It might be nice if we got a little bit of her perspective on this. Or are we not supposed to care, and just assume that she’s a heartless bitch?

I’m not saying there aren’t real-life women who are awful to men. I’m saying I don’t think that needs to be the default assumption about all women, as it seems to be in this case.

Maybe the human race deserves to be wiped out in a zombie plague.

Dunno how much longer I’m gonna keep watching this. I’m so not thrilled with it...
