the oh-no! DVD of the week: ‘The Killer Robots and the Battle for the Cosmic Potato’

Might as well just buy a copy and see what it’s all about. Sheesh:

Four robotic fugitives are recruited by a race of alien plant people to help locate the fabled Cosmic Potato of Power. But before they can reclaim this mighty vegetable, they must contend with an army of Amazonian space pirates, mechanized bounty hunters and an ever-expanding creature of Lovecraftian proportions. If you’ve gotten this far into the paragraph you’re probably somewhat perplexed. Maybe even befuddled! You might as well buy a copy of this DVD and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. Featuring the degenerate intergalactic rock band THE KILLER ROBOTS! as themselves!

There’s a trailer that’s not so much a trailer as a seemingly indiscriminate collection of cheap computer-generated imagery and bits of random dialogue meant to suggest, I imagine, a sort of deliberate cheesiness and self-aware would-be coolness:

Oh, wait, now I get it. From the official site:

The Killer Robots are a theatrical rock band in the tradition of GWAR, KISS and Alice Cooper. We play rock music in giant robot suits and battle monsters onstage. It's an enjoyable spectacle and we always try to make the show fun and interactive. Our sound has been described as a mixture of Devo, Dead Milkmen and GWAR.

It’s enjoyable. They assure us of this, so it must be true.
