question of the day: What are your thoughts on the Oscar nominations?

I know they’re completely absurd and don’t mean a damn thing except who gets to ask for more money next time contract negotiations come around, but it’s fun to talk about the Oscars, even if all that means is just talking about movies, actors, directors, and writers we love, hate, and consider over- or underappreciated. And it means we can trash the Academy and its plebian tastes, too. So:

What are your thoughts on the Oscar nominations?

I’m surprised -- in the most pleasant way -- by all the love for Winter’s Bone. It’s a great film, but a tough one, and it’s not usually the kind of movie that gets this much attention from the Academy: it’s more the kind of movie that they throw a conciliatory nod to with one nomination, like maybe for screenplay. But acting notices and a Best Picture nom, too? Wow.

And now I must wrap up my reviews of the nominees and my own best-ofs asap...
