question of the day: Is the Hollywood Walk of Fame a relic of yesteryear... and how could we update it?

Indeed, my general feel of the thing turns out to be correct: the Walk dates from the 1950s. The Walk’s official Web site calls it “the world's most famous sidewalk,” which is sort of charming and small-town homey, and appropriate, perhaps, for Hollywood, which is its own kind of huge small town.

The plaques embedded in the sidewalk do end up being used as memorials sometimes, which coincidentally also happened yesterday, when Bob Hope’s widow, Dolores Hope, passed away at the age of 102, and @wofstargirl tweeted:

Sad news. Dolores Hope has passed away.Placing flowers on her star at 4 pm today at 7021 Hollywood Blvd. Her star is next to Bob Hopes star.

Alas that a 102-year-old star of the past (Dolores was a singer) does seem more connected to the Walk of Fame than the likes of Jon Cryer do.

Is it just me? Is the Hollywood Walk of Fame a relic of yesteryear... and how could we update it?
