question of the day: Is there any better choice than the Muppets for Oscar hosts?

Kermit the Frog in a tuxedo

I just knew that my sudden not-abject-hate for Brett Ratner -- over the surprise amusement that is Tower Heist -- couldn’t last.

You’ve probably heard by now that several homophobic and misogynist comments -- uttered proudly and publicly by Ratner and which I won’t repeat here -- have forced his resignation from the Oscars-producing gig that we were all dreading anyway. Ratner’s chosen host, Eddie Murphy, is out too; (we had discussed Murphy’s potential as an Oscar host a few months back). Brian Grazer has been brought hastily in as producer.

But that leaves us without a host for the Oscars. Way back in 2009, we brainstormed great Oscar hosts, but one of the greatest -- if probably, alas, fantastical -- suggestions has cropped up online in the last 24 hours: the Muppets should host. The concept is self-explanatory and its awesomeness is obvious. But see the Twitter feed and the Facebook page anyway for a jolt of sweet madness and a cheerful start to your day.

If the Muppets aren’t available, what other fantastical options do we have? Or perhaps the question really is: Is there any better choice than the Muppets for Oscar hosts? Spongebob Squarepants? Troy McClure and Rainier Wolfcastle? Who else could we trust with this noble endeavor?
