question of the day: What is the most egregious snub among the Oscar nominations for 2011’s films?

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the Oscar nominations for the upcoming 2012 Oscars -- honoring films released in 2011 -- were announced yesterday. The complete list of nominees is available at ABC’s Academy Awards site. My first reaction was, Crap, I got a lotta films to catch up with reviews of in the next few weeks. My second reaction was, What? No nomination for Michael Fassbender for Shame? No nom for Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin? What the--?

I also thought: Jeez, Jonah Hill is an Oscar nominee? Moneyball isn’t that good! And from now on, forever and ever, it’ll be “Oscar nominee Jonah Hill.” Thanks, Academy... But that’s the other side of the coin.

So: What is the most egregious snub among the Oscar nominations for 2011’s films? If you need some help, Ranker has its own list of the most egregious Oscar snubs for this year, which also includes Albert Brooks in Drive, Michael Shannon in Take Shelter, and Andy Serkis in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. As always, there are many more superb male performances than female -- a reflection of the quality of the work that women get, not their talent -- and Ranker’s list is dominated by men. Ranker misses Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene, a huge snub to an astonishing new actor in an astonishing film.
