ON THIS DAY: In 1984, Winston Smith began keeping his subversive, secret diary in the dystopian novel 1984 -- his first entry was "Down with Big Brother." (Today was also, in the novel, the first day of the government-sponsored Hate Week.) George Orwell's nightmare vision of the loss of privacy and individuality was vividly portrayed in the 1984 adaptation of the novel -- called, of course, NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR -- starring John Hurt as Smith. |
