ON THIS DAY: In 1970, disaster struck the Apollo 13 moon mission when an oxygen tank ruptured, forcing astronauts Fred Haise, Jim Lovell, and Jack Swigert to abandon their planned lunar touchdown. The world was held its collective breath for nearly a week, as is depicted in Ron Howard's surprisingly suspenseful 1995 film, APOLLO 13, about the crew's desperate attempt to return safely to Earth in their crippled ship.
