ON THIS DAY: In 1986, a nuclear reactor in Chernobyl, in the Ukraine, exploded, directly killing 31 people and exposing upwards of hundreds of thousands of people to radioactive fallout as far as away as Scandinavia. The fears of reactor meltdown -- which partly occurred in Chernobyl -- have never been more frighteningly depicted than in 1979's THE CHINA SYNDROME, about an exec at a nuclear plant (Jack Lemmon) who goes public about an accident to a TV journalist (Jane Fonda). |
