ON THIS DAY: In 1789, members of the crew of HMS Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian, commandeered the ship from its captain, Lieutenant William Bligh -- the mutineers retreated to then-uninhabited Pitcairn Island, where they remained undiscovered for nearly two decades. The best dramatization of the most famous mutiny in naval history is still 1935's adaptation, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, starring Clark Gable as Christian and Charles Laughton as Bligh. |
