ON THIS DAY: In 1939, Albert Einstein wrote his now-famous letter to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, suggesting the possibility of a new type of bomb, an "atomic" one, capable of vast destruction. The events that followed from the letter and led to the atomic bombing of two Japanese cities in 1945 are depicted in 1989's FAT MAN AND LITTLE BOY, about the building of the bombs at the secret Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. |
