ON THIS DAY: In 1959, Explorer VI, a satellite launched by the United States, transmitted the first photograph of the planet Earth from space, giving humankind its first view of our world from beyond it. The first film to treat Earth as a unified, almost borderless entity may be Wim Wenders' science-fiction masterpiece UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, a globetrotting romantic adventure made in 1991 and set in 1999.
