ON THIS DAY: In 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally to the United States, ending World War II in the Pacific, one day after the U.S. dropped its second atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The horrors of America's war with Japan have been the subject of many a film, including 1949's SANDS OF IWO JIMA, in which John Wayne's Marine sergeant trains recruits for what would be one of the most dangerous campaigns of the war. |
