ON THIS DAY: In 1881, movie director Cecil B. DeMille was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts. A film pioneer known for his epic, large-scale productions, he was the first filmmaker to use lighting on an indoor set, the first to publicize the names of his stars, and the first to use sneak previews to sell a film. He may be best known for his last film, 1956's THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, a Bible saga starring Charlton Heston as Moses that was actually a remake of DeMille's silent 1923 film of the same name. |
