ON THIS DAY: In 1961, the Berlin Wall was erected. Initially the "wall" was figurative, as the government of East Germany closed the border between the eastern and western sectors of the city, but later in the week, a concrete wall was built to fortify the border and prevent illegal crossings. The Wall became infamous for dangerous crossings, though, one of which was dramatized in1981's NIGHT CROSSING, based on the true story of two East German families who escaped in a hot-air balloon. |
