ON THIS DAY: In 1655, the first theatrical play was performed in what is now the United States, in the British colony of Virginia. Three locals were arrested and fined for acting in YE BARE AND YE CUBB by Phillip Alexander Bruce, thus beginning the American tradition of subversive actors. The custom is honored by the thespians of 1999's CRADLE WILL ROCK, who stage a seditious musical during the politically skittish Great Depression. |
