ON THIS DAY: In 1901, animator, filmmaker, and theme-park entrepreneur Walt Disney was born in Chicago (he died in Los Angeles in 1966). Disney revolutionized film when he gambled on 1937's SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS, the first entirely animated feature-length movie. Though the industry scoffed at the concept, it was a huge success in its initial release and has charmed decades' worth of audiences in numerous rereleases, and it launched a corporate empire that continues to produce groundbreaking animation to this day. |
