ON THIS DAY: In 1923, Norman Rockwell's painting of three Christmas carolers appeared on the cover of the SATURDAY EVENING POST, one of his earliest covers for the magazine. Perhaps the absolute antithesis of the Rockwell-type Christmas -- homey, down-to-earth, and full of childlike wonder and gentle humor -- is to be found in the 1989 comedy NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION, about the disasters that befall Chevy Chase's ill-fortuned Clark Griswold and his benighted family.
