ON THIS DAY: In 1775, Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, England (she died in 1817.) Many of the beloved novelist's books have been rejiggered for film and television, such as the fairly faithful 1996 adaptation EMMA, starring Gwyneth Paltrow as the title character, in a performance that had many moviegoers convinced that the Los Angeles-born and American-raised actress was actually English. |
