ON THIS DAY: In 1958, the American satellite Atlas, launched the day before from Cape Canaveral, transmitted the first voice broadcast from space: a recorded Christmas greeting from U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower, wishing "peace on Earth and goodwill toward men everywhere." Christmas and space mix uneasily in the godawful yet strangely compelling 1964 film SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS, in which Old Saint Nick travels to Mars to teach the inhabitants -- including a young Pia Zadora -- yup, the true meaning of Christmas. |
