ON THIS DAY: In 1988, Pan Am flight 103 was destroyed over Lockerbie, Scotland, when a terrorist-planted bomb in the luggage compartment exploded -- 259 people on the plane and 11 on the ground were killed. The 1990 TV movie TRAGEDY OF FLIGHT 103: THE INSIDE STORY revealed that government and the airline had known that the flight was a potential terrorist target and did nothing to alert passengers. (Earlier that year, your very own Flick Filosopher had taken, for her first transatlantic journey, that very flight on the very plane that blew up.) |
