ON THIS DAY: In 1943, U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his famous Christmas Fireside Chat, in which he warned Americans that the war in progress was reaching the point at which the nation must expect huge causalities. His own constant sacrifice for the sake of others, denying him his own dreams, is what finally drives Jimmy Stewart to attempt suicide in the much-loved 1946 film IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. As required in a movie about selflessness, however unintended, an angel teaches Jimmy to learn to love what he has instead of lamenting the opportunities he has lost. |
