ON THIS DAY: In 1914, Bert Parks was born in Atlanta, Georgia (he died in California in 1992). Though he was an actor of diverse experience, from radio to film to Broadway, he is best known as the emcee of the Miss America beauty pageant, a job he held for 25 years. Last year's misfire comedy MISS CONGENIALITY, set at the annual "Miss United States" pageant, asks us to laugh at an FBI agent, played by Sandra Bullock, who isn't as feminine as all good women should be, and who gets lessons in beauty when she goes undercover at the pageant. Har har. |
