ON THIS DAY: The ancient Romans celebrated Fornacalia, a festival of breads, ovens, and the oven goddess -- the day was also intended to encourage plants to grow well in the coming spring and summer. Plants grow extremely well in the spooky 1963 science fiction movie THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, when a freaky meteor shower blinds nearly everyone on Earth and mutates our harmless green leafy friends, turning them into flesh-eating monsters. Revenge for vegetarianism, perhaps. |
