ON THIS DAY: In 1942, the U.S. government began interning Japanese-Americans (two-thirds of whom were American citizens) in concentration camps all over the western half of the country. SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS, from 1999, is one of the few films to deal with this particular stain on American history -- Ethan Hawke and Youki Kudoh play former young lovers separated by the internment. |
