ON THIS DAY: In 1943, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel attacked and defeated U.S. forces at Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, but only a month later, Rommel's defeat at the hands of the British would spell the end of his command. One Allied commander who had Rommel's number was the subject of the 1970 Oscar-winning biopic PATTON. As George C. Scott in the title role famously announced in the film, Patton had read the book about military strategy written by Rommel -- that "magnificent bastard" -- and hence was prepared to counter his movements. |
