ON THIS DAY: In 1732, George Washington, a leader of the American revolution and the first president of the United States, was born in the British colony of Virginia (though a calendar at the time would have read "February 11," since the old Julian system of reckoning the date was still in use). Washington's finest hour as a military commander may have been the sneak attack he led against Hessian mercenaries encamped in Trenton, New Jersey, on Christmas Day, 1776. This turning point for the rebellion is thrillingly depicted in 2000's THE CROSSING, starring Jeff Daniels as the man of the hour. |
