TODAY IS: The 24th day of Black History Month, which has been observed since 1976 to commemorate the achievements and contributions of black Americans. One of the most extraordinary episodes in the history of black Americans -- and one typically ignored -- is the role that blacks played as soldiers during the Civil War. GLORY, from 1989, portrays the 54th Massachusetts, the first black volunteer infantry unit to fight in the war. With fabulous performances from a cast including Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Cary Elwes, this is a beautiful tribute.
