ON THIS DAY: In 1983, the final episode of the television series M*A*S*H aired -- an astounding 77 percent of the viewing audience tuned in, a record at the time. The show was so popular and had such a long run -- 11 years -- that it lasted longer than the Korean War, during which it was set. The film that spawned the show -- Robert Altman's 1970 MASH -- is well loved by fans of black comedy, but many discerning viewers feel that M*A*S*H represents that most rare of medical cases: the TV spinoff that's actually better than its source movie. |
