TODAY IS: The day the Earth reaches perihelion, the annual point at which its orbit takes it closest to the sun, at about 91,400,000 miles. The ol' home planet gets a lot closer in the 1961 science fiction classic THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE, when test detonations of nuclear bombs send the planet careening out of orbit and plunging toward the sun.
