TODAY IS: The observed and actual anniversary of the birth of civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work. (Today is designated as Civil Rights Day in New Hampshire). MISSISSIPPI BURNING, from 1988, is unfortunately yet another civil-rights film told from a white perspective instead of a black one. But it is nevertheless one of the better Hollywood portrayals to date of precisely the kind of horrors that King fought against. |
