TODAY IS: Confederate Heroes Day, an official holiday in Texas, observed on the anniversary of the birth of Robert E. Lee, the Confederacy's greatest general. Few movies have told stories of the American Civil War from the point of view of the Confederates -- one of the best is Ang Lee's 1999 film RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. This little-seen film is well worth catching on video for strong performances from its young cast -- including Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, and Jewel -- as confused young people making the best of dangerous times.
