ON THIS DAY: In 1535, Sir Thomas More was executed for treason -- the chancellor of England, More refused to condone King Henry III's serial divorces, nor would he acknowledge Hank as the head of the breakaway Church of England. The Oscar-winning Best Picture of 1966, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, which stars Paul Scofield as More, dramatizes the chancellor's final days. |
