ON THIS DAY: In 1914, World War I began when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo, sparking an ethnic conflict that quickly escalated into continent-wide war. The very first movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture was 1927's WINGS, a silent drama about a love quadrangle amongst two American pilots in the Great War and the gals they love back home, starring Clara Bow and featuring a cameo from a very young Gary Cooper. |
