ON THIS DAY: In 1948, Idlewild Airport opened in New York City, dedicated by President Truman (the airport is now called John F. Kennedy International). The biggest robbery in U.S. history occurred at the airport in 1978, when $6 million was stolen from the Lufthansa cargo facility by New York mobsters. The story behind the heist comes out in 1990's GOODFELLAS, told from the point of view of Henry Hill, one of the thieves. |
