ON THIS DAY: In 1740, the Marquis de Sade was born in Paris -- he died in 1814 in a lunatic asylum, having spent much of his life behind bars for acts of cruelty, violence, and general antisocial behavior. Though it sugarcoats de Sade somewhat, last year's semibiographical QUILLS uses his life and writings to explore the limits of artistic freedom and expression. |
