ON THIS DAY: In 1944, Allied forces launched a sneak attack on German-occupied France, landing on the beaches of Normandy in the early-morning hours, taking the Axis troops by surprise and establishing a second front in the European war. The best depiction on film yet of the D-Day invasion is in the opening minutes of 1998's SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Director Steven Spielberg stages the battle with such realistic ferocity that many veterans of the attack found they could not watch it.
