ON THIS DAY: In 1891, composer and lyricist Cole Porter was born in Indiana (he died in 1964 in California). Best known for his Broadway musicals -- including KISS ME KATE and ANYTHING GOES -- he also wrote songs for several films, including 1956's HIGH SOCIETY, in which Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby vie for the affections of Grace Kelly. One Porter tune from the film, "True Love," was nominated for an Oscar. |
