ON THIS DAY: In 1924, Audie Murphy was born in 1924 (he was killed in a plane crash in 1971). Featured on a 1945 cover of LIFE magazine as World War II's most decorated GI, he caught the attention of Hollywood and appeared in a handful of films -- his most notable role may be as a soldier in the 1951 Civil War drama THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE. |
