TODAY IS: National HIV Testing Day, sponsored by the National Association of People with AIDS to encourage us to take control of our own health (see napwa.org for more info). Hollywood was slow to address the issue of AIDS -- it wasn't until 1993's PHILADELPHIA that a character with the disease was featured in a major studio film. The fact that the sufferer was portrayed by the beloved Tom Hanks surely helped make the potentially controversial film more acceptable to mainstream audiences.
